Why Would Someone Steal a Child’s Identity?

Young children are prime targets for identity theft. Why? They have valid Social Security numbers and clean credit records. Credit agencies don’t report age so no one knows how old they are. And, since neither they nor their parents often check the child’s credit, theft of their identity can go undetected for years. Do your children a favor and check their credit for them. It’s not as simple as checking your own credit; as a parent and not the child him/herself, you’ll be asked to provide additional documentation. Additional details can be found here on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website. Once this is done and you’ve verified there are no problems, it’s a good idea to freeze their credit. This will make it more difficult to have their identities stolen. Most identity thieves will simply pass them over and find easier targets.
